Eight years ago, the McDowell News ran a front-page story titled "No Surrender" when Rusty's Legacy founder, Jeri Arledge, began her fight against head and neck cancer.
Today, Jeri is facing another battle—this time with breast cancer.
For years, Jeri has dedicated her life to helping the dogs nobody else wanted. The abandoned dogs. The neglected dogs. The unwanted litters. The injured strays with nowhere to go. Through countless late nights, emergency calls, veterinary visits, and difficult rescues, she has remained committed to one mission: giving dogs a second chance.
Today, that mission continues.
Despite Jeri undergoing radiation therapy five days a week for six weeks, Rusty's Legacy remains fully operational. Dogs are still being rescued, transported, fed, housed, vetted, spayed and neutered, treated for illness and injury, and placed into loving homes.
We have not stopped saving lives.
But continuing this work requires resources.
Every day, dogs in our care depend on us for food, shelter, veterinary care, heartworm prevention, vaccinations, and sometimes extensive medical treatment. These expenses continue whether donations come in or not.
As the only licensed dog rescue in McDowell County, we know there are still dogs who need us. Dogs who are scared, homeless, abandoned, neglected, or facing uncertain futures. We want to be there for every one of them.
